DBT Pornography Addiction Skills Workgroup
Studies show that Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
helps people stop many behaviors including drinking, using drugs, binge/purge on food,
self-harming, suicide attempts or threats, etc. DBT works by combining individual therapy with skills training in a workgroup. The
individual therapist encourages the client to use the skills they learn in their
workgroup instead of their dysfunctional behavior. As the client gains control
over the behavior, the therapist and client are then able to identify what
motivates the behavior.
The DBT Center of Sacramento is forming a workgroup
specifically for pornography addiction. The two group leaders and all
participants are men. Group members are attempting to quit their
pornography addiction. Participants in this workgroup will learn DBT skills to
substitute for compulsive pornography viewing.
While in the group, participants must be meeting regularly
with therapist. The group will meet weekly for 1.5 hours. The time of the
meetings will be between 4 and 5:30 PM, but the day has not be selected.
Participants must commit for a minimum of 12 weeks with the understanding that a
full DBT program lasts exactly one year. Participants will be encouraged to
continue after the twelve-week introduction.
